Parkinson's Disease Exercise training

Parkinsons' Disease Specific Exercise Training

Exercise is Medicine! Let's follow the Research

Research has indicated that in order to target the optimal exercise routine for feeling better and moving better, a person with Parkinson’s disease needs to push themselves to work at a challenging cardiovascular and resistance levels, as well as move in big movements or amplitudes. With continued practice in exercising, this helps increased cognitive stimulation and challenges. This cognitive training and increased blood flow approach helps address the brain health for ideal functioning. A person with Parkinson’s disease needs to address the whole body when exercising. This needs to target all muscles within the body, from the muscles in our head/face, trunk, and arms and legs!

By exercising in the best way possible; addressing brain and body, in utilizing multidirectional, large amplitude, high intensity and appropriate movement patterns, this targets the building blocks of function. The result should be to help a person with Parkinson’s disease move better, safer and with more independence, as well as slow the disease progression!

What’s the best exercise approach for you?

Therapy & Personal Training - You prefer 1-on-1, individualized attention. Here you get feedback about your form and guidance on an intensity level that's specific to you, your body, and your health status.

Group Exercise Classes - You prefer the "tribal" feel and camaraderie of working out in a group. You're okay with general guidance on form and intensity.

Personal Training & Group Exercise Classes - You're looking for someone to hold you accountable and keep you fit and strong. You want to stay active after finishing a bout of physical therapy. You haven't had any falls, injuries, or decline in function in the last 3 months.

PWR!Moves: Parkinson’s-Specific Exercise Program

The PWR!Moves were developed to specifically target four areas shown by research to interfere with mobility in people with Parkinson’s Disease including posture, side to side weight shifting, trunk rotation and stepping. Each of these four skills target a specific effect of Parkinson’s Disease including slow movement, rigidity and incoordination. The PWR!Moves also incorporate skills involving breathing, vision, voice and cognitive function.

The PWR!Moves improve both motor (movement) and non-motor symptoms like mood, anxiety, fatigue, sleep, pain and cognitive function.

People of all abilities and at any stage of PD can benefit from the PWR!Moves program. The basic four PWR!Moves are performed using BIG MOVEMENTS and HIGH EFFORT in multiple functional positions (stomach, back, all 4’s, sitting and standing) and as a result can help improve all the things we do each day like activities of daily living, work, sports and hobbies. It's not only WHAT you do, it's HOW you do it that provides the best results.

PWR!Moves can be used as a standalone exercise program, but more importantly, these exerices can be integrated into ANY exercise program, ANY activity or function (i.e. activities of daily living, recreation, sports and hobbies) and in ANY setting (one-on-one therapy or community group). PWR!Moves helps you do all of the things you do or want to do even better! The PWR!Moves are a perfect addition to the Parkinson’s boxing or dance programs!

Dr. Darci Pernoud, OT is a Certified Therapist in the PWR!Moves program. PWR!Moves is a Parkinson’s Disease specific skill training program to maintain or restore skills that deteriorate and interfere with everyday movement. It’s evidence-based and was developed by Dr. Becky Farley, creator of the LSVT BIG program. PWR!Moves is the functional evolution of the LSVT BIG program. Since it’s the next generation exercise program, you will greatly benefit from doing the PWR!Moves, even if you’ve already completed the LSVT BIG program!
